Licensing

Free for noncommercial use. Licensed for commercial use.

Turf™ is free for individuals, students, researchers, educational institutions, public research organizations, charities and government institutions, under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. Commercial use, including a company’s internal use, requires a license from Turf LLC.

Evaluating Turf at a company?

We offer a free 60-day evaluation under the Common Paper Pilot Agreement, a standard contract you can read in full at commonpaper.com/standards/pilot-agreement. Email licensing@turf.build and we will send a one-page cover page.

The pilot is for internal evaluation only. The binary you already have is the one you evaluate; there is no separate build or key. If Turf works for you, the pilot rolls into a production subscription.

Running Turf in production?

Production use is licensed under the Common Paper Software License Agreement (commonpaper.com/standards/software-license-agreement) with an annual subscription that includes updates, support, a conformance warranty and IP indemnity. Embedding Turf in your own product is available under a redistribution license; ask us.

One binary, no license key

Every Turf build is the same binary with the same features and ships with an SBOM. There is no license key and nothing to unlock: a commercial license is a contract and a support relationship. We trust companies to license what they run.

Telemetry

Turf sends anonymous usage telemetry to Turf LLC by default: the version, the platform, counts of resources, changes and runs, and an anonymous installation id. It never sends resource contents, credentials, state, variable values or names. Turn it off with turf telemetry off, or with TURF_TELEMETRY=off or DO_NOT_TRACK=1 in the engine's environment; the full field list and the endpoint are at turf.build/telemetry.

Source

The turf CLI’s source, at github.com/turfbuild/turf, is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Turf as a whole, the CLI together with the engine and the MCP server in every release archive and in the Homebrew formula, is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 (SPDX PolyForm-Noncommercial-1.0.0). The license text ships in every release, with its required notice: Copyright Turf LLC.
